Senior Outdoor Pursuits

During the first week of Half Term, 32 students from Years 12 and 13 travelled to the Black Mountains in South Wales to complete a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.

Whilst Year 13 groups underwent an Assessed Expedition, three Year 12 groups were able to use the expedition as a practice.

Although the ground was very saturated in places, the weather overhead was dry and sunny for almost the entire time.

Following a challenging first few kilometres, participants enjoyed some great views of South Wales from the top of Sugar Loaf on the first morning.

Days two and three were also testing with many groups choosing to walk over the high routes towards Hey Bluff or on the Offa’s Dyke path towards the beautiful priory at Llanthony.

On the final day all of the groups managed to navigate to the finish just outside Abergavenny in good time and spirits.

The two Year 13 groups impressed the assessor and consequently passed this part of the Gold Award.
