Science (KS3 and GCSE Only)
Key Stage 3
Kingswood pupils start their Science education by following a course that is based on the AQA KS3 syllabus and that develops the ‘10 big ideas’. The aim of this course is to allow pupils to understand how to apply their current knowledge to new or unfamiliar concepts. This spiral approach to teaching allows ideas to be revisited at a higher level each year such that learning is reviewed and consolidated throughout the course and eventually mastered.
From Year 9, pupils start the Edexcel IGCSE course in Science. Pupils study the three separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and take the related papers for the IGCSE examinations in June of Year 11. This course is timetabled for nine lessons a week, three for each Science subject, all taught by a specialist teacher.
The Science department at Kingswood is extremely well resourced and supported by experienced technicians. It allows practical work to be embedded within the teaching. The department organises trips to visit museums and university Science departments and invites external speakers to visit throughout the course to inspire the pupils. Kingswood also offers a wealth of Science clubs.
