Lower School - Years 7-8
Our Lower School encompasses all our pupils in Years 7 and 8. We are also known as Westwood because all pupils use Westwood House as their base and home-away-from-home for the first two years of their schooling at Kingswood. With some 160 day pupils and 40 boarders, the House is always busy and full of life!
Head of Lower School, Mr Steve Pentreath, and Assistant Head of Lower School, Mr Nic Curtis, have day-to-day responsibility for pupils in Years 7 and 8 and ensure that each pupil has the opportunity to thrive throughout the different areas of school life.
In our Lower School, we have the responsibility of helping our pupils transition from their previous schools into our community at Kingswood. Having Westwood House as our base provides the safe space needed for our pupils to adjust and grow in their first two years at Kingswood.
To help with this, we also have 18 hand-picked academic tutors attached to the Lower School who meet with their tutees every morning. The tutors get to know these pupils really well, are the first port of call for any academic concerns and write reports on their tutees’ progress, attitude and behaviour as well as ensuring that every child has a full, varied and balanced activity programme.
In addition, 20 Lower Sixth girls and boys are appointed as Westwood Prefects who act as role models and buddies for the pupils, support the tutors and provide weekend support for the boarders.
