Summerhill is a warm and friendly, senior girls House for 32 boarders and 55 day girls in Years 9-13, located on College Road on the edge of the Kingswood campus. The Senior Housemistress is Mrs Alex Matthews, who also teaches Geography and lives on site with her husband who teaches Sport, and their two young children. She is assisted by Miss Sophie Elliott, who teaches art, nine tutors and two House matrons, who help foster a friendly atmosphere and aid staff in various aspects of running the House.
Summerhill has a team of House prefects, which include a Head of House, Head of Boarding, who are elected on an annual basis. The prefects help the House staff run the House, supervise prep for Years 9-13 and play an active role in the pastoral care of others. The prefects also assist in organising House teams, competitions and social events, as well as initiating charity work. The House is extremely well equipped with two cosy common rooms, equipped with Sky TV, a DVD player and football table, two computers with skype facilities, a well-equipped kitchen, locker rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms which range in size from five-bed to single rooms.
On Saturdays breakfast is in the House. Students are allowed to go into Bath on their own to pick up provisions and do some shopping and on Saturday evenings, Mr Brown often cooks a curry or pasta dish before the House gets together to watch a film. On Sundays, there is brunch at 11am so that the boarders can have a well-deserved lie in! Snacks are available in the House throughout the week. The tutors are responsible for the girls academic progress, co-curricular involvement and pastoral welfare and are the first point of contact regarding academic matters for parents. There are organised group tutorials every week and tutors also liaise regularly with their tutees on a one-to-one basis. You can download a copy of the weekday and weekend Summerhill Daily Routine and the full programme of Summerhill House Events. Find out more in the Summerhill Handbook.
