Our Sustainable Initiatives

At Kingswood School we have come to realise that changing attitudes and raising awareness within our society are very important. Small changes in our behaviour can add up to a big difference.

We believe that concern for the environment and realisation of our need to do something about it has transformed our school community for the better over recent years. It all started in 2004 when we adopted the Eco-Schools framework - a student-driven initiative involving the whole community. Wishing to build on our initial success, the Headmaster created a Sustainable Development Committee early in 2008. Consequently, representatives of all the stakeholders (Governors, Senior Management Team, students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff including the Bursar, Catering and Facilities Managers) now meet termly to discuss the advancement of sustainability within the School and take appropriate actions.

Mahatma Ghandi once said: 'Be the change you want to see in the world' and students are taking heed of his advice.

Our Objectives:

  • Increase awareness of sustainable issues
  • Carry out action to promote sustainability
  • Help students develop the skills needed to rise to the challenges of an increasingly uncertain future

Successes include:

  • Working with a local company to minimise our waste
  • Supporting Fin Fighters' campaign to make Bath shark fin free
  • Organising and running the B&NES Youth Climate Summit annually.  The most recent summit was held on the 8th and 9th of February, 2016.  Further information about this event can be found by following this link and on MP Barry Gardiner’s website click here.
  • Working with local organisation, Green Vision, to train students as facilitators addressing environmental issues
  • Installing solar panels on our sports pavilion
  • Monitoring by students of waste and energy
  • Four Eco-Schools Green Flag Awards
  • Gaining Fair Trade status
