Middle House has been completely refurbished and re-opened last year. 42 boarders and 61 day boys are members of Middle House - a senior boys' house for students in Years 9-13. Middle House prides itself on the good relationships that develop between boys of all ages within the House. Older pupils give support to younger ones, and the junior pupils help the older boys appreciate their job as role models, with a pastoral role to play in the welfare of others. The staff and pupils have extremely positive relationships and there is a real sense of fun in the House as the boys really know how to enjoy themselves, whether taking part in Wide Games on the Upper, Easter Egg hunts or BBQs in the House garden!
The Senior Housemaster, Mr Steve Smyth, who also teaches geography, lives in the House with his wife Laura, who teaches Biology at Kingswood and, his two young children. He is supported by Mr Sean Thomas as Resident Assistant, ten tutors and three non-resident matrons who organise the cleaning, laundry and are a great source of support for the boys. The tutors are responsible for the boys academic progress, co-curricular involvement and pastoral welfare and are the first point of contact regarding academic matters for parents. There are organised group tutorials every week and tutors also liaise regularly with their tutees on a one-to-one basis and evening prep is supervised by a member of staff.
The staff are supported by Upper Sixth Prefects which include a Head of House, Head of Boarding and a team of prefects. These boys are expected to set an outstanding example to the other House members and duties consist of, amongst others, drawing up rotas, chairing council meetings, helping with day to day duties and running House events. Middle House has excellent, modern facilities in terms of common rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms - some of which are en suite, games rooms, two computers with skype facilities, a well-equipped kitchen and locker areas. In the common rooms there is satellite television, a Blue Ray player, table tennis table, daily newspapers and daily supplies for the House kitchen. Snacks are available in the House throughout the week.
A number of House social events take place during the year including theatre and cinema trips, weekend meals and end of term events. In addition, Middle House is twinned with Summerhill, one of the girls boarding houses, for events which are entered into with a great sense of competition and pride including Wide Games on the Upper in the autumn term, Easter Egg hunt in the spring term and Water Slide and BBQ in the summer term.
