"The limits of my language are the limits of my world." Learning French at Kingswood is an enriching experience where students learn not only to understand and speak the language but also to gain an insight into the exciting and varied culture of France and French-speaking countries.
French, being spoken by over 200 million people on five continents in over forty countries, is one of the major global languages. It is the second most widely learned foreign language after English and it is also the only language, alongside English that is taught in every country in the world. An ability to speak French and English is a huge advantage on the international job market. It opens the doors to French companies in France and in other French-speaking parts of the world, namely Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, and North and sub-Saharan Africa.
At Kingswood, the French department encourages students to speak as much French in their lessons as possible. We use a variety of teaching resources in order to keep language learning stimulating and interactive, as well as incorporating independent learning through the use of our language laboratory. We are also able to offer our A level students individual weekly speaking lessons with a native French assistant.
We are keen for our pupils to experience French outside the classroom too. Examples of some of the events and trips that have taken place over recent years include:
- Annual French plays for KS3 and KS4 pupils produced by the Onatti theatre group http://onatti.co.uk
- A Level cinema evenings at the Little Theatre, Bath
- KS5 Dictée activity
- KS3 trip to Paris, France
- Exchange in Toulouse
- Years 7 and 8 French Drama club
- Sixth Form Languages Day at Southampton University
