Fonthill is a warm, friendly, senior girls' boarding house located on Fonthill Road at the edge of the Kingswood campus. 29 boarders and 50 day girls from Years 9-13 are members of Fonthill, which provides a caring and homely environment where every girl is treated as an individual, listened to and encouraged to be the best she can be. The House staff encourage mutual respect between themselves and the pupils and aim to develop an appreciation of community living, where being kind, looking after each other and having fun is very much part of the Fonthill ethos.
The Senior Housemistress, Mrs Clare Sergeant, who also teaches IT and Computer Science, lives in an attached house behind Fonthill with her daughter. She is supported by Miss Sarah Brookes, who is also Head of French, six tutors and two matrons who look after the girls and provide great moral support. The tutors are responsible for the girls' academic progress, co-curricular involvement and pastoral welfare and are the first point of contact regarding academic matters for parents. There are organised group tutorials every week and tutors also liaise regularly with their tutees on a one-to-one basis.
Fonthill also has a team of 10 Upper Sixth House Prefects, which includes a Head of House and Head of Boarding, who are elected annually. The prefects help staff run the House, supervise prep for Years 9-11 and play an active pastoral care role, providing a listening ear, friendly advice or support when required. The prefects also assist in organising House teams, competitions and social events as well as initiating charity work. In addition, three or four Lower Sixth girls are selected as Westwood Prefects, acting as role models, providing support and organising events for the junior girls. The House is extremely well equipped with two cosy common rooms, equipped with Sky TV, a DVD player and football table, two computers with skype facilities, a well-equipped kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms which range in size from three-bed to single rooms. Snacks are available in the House throughout the week.
A number of House social events take place during the year including theatre and cinema trips, weekend meals and end of term events. You can view or download the timetables for the weekdays and weekends Fonthill Daily Routine. The girls in Fonthill are welcome to invite visitors to the House, just as they would into their homes. Each House member may invite two guests in activity time, who are signed on upon arrival, into the communal areas. Many of the boarders are often invited to the homes of local day students for birthday parties, special events or get-togethers, and getting to know local families is of real benefit for those far away from home.
Accessing Bath for boarders is extremely easy and an ideal location to replenish supplies and enjoy some weekend shopping! Years 9-11 are allowed into town at the weekend and Sixth Formers can go into Bath in activity time as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. Fonthill is also twinned with Hall House – one of the boys' boarding houses. Joint House events are held at the end of each term: Ice Skating and a meal in the autumn, Dodgeball in the spring and a BBQ and outdoor games in the summer term. You can see the list of organised house events during the course of the year in Fonthill House Events. You can view or download a copy of the Fonthill House Handbook.
