The thriving and exuberant Drama department at Kingwood School offers pupils of all ages the opportunity to develop a passion for the theatre whilst developing essential 'soft skills' necessary for all walks of life.
The department consists of two full-time and one part-time fully qualified Drama teachers. We also employ a Drama assistant (typically a Theatre graduate) each year and are ably supported by a full time Theatre and Technical manager.
Drama is taught as a discrete subject to all year groups and is a popular option at GCSE and A Level.
At Key Stage Three, pupils receive either one or two lessons a week. Through the practical study of Drama we aim to help all pupils develop 'soft skills' - confidence, communication, collaboration, independence, organisation, resilience, empathy - to name but a few!
In Year 10 pupils can opt to take AQA GCSE Drama which consists of practical assessments and a written examination. At A Level students take AQA Drama and Theatre which also includes the study of set texts. In both courses students can opt to take technical or design options over traditional acting. Full details of the specifications can be found by clicking on the links at the bottom of the screen.
Throughout the year GCSE and A Level pupils perform their devised and scripted assessments in either the 375 seat theatre or the fully equipped 'black box' drama studio. For some years students have achieved an 100% pass rate of an A*/A for their practical work and, recently, a piece of A2 devised drama was used as exemplar material for nationwide standardisation of AQA Drama teachers.
Whilst some Drama and Theatre students have successfully auditioned for Drama schools, most have used their Drama skills to go on to study a wide variety of subjects at Russell Group universities - including Oxford and Cambridge. A full list of these is available from the Drama department.
