Ten Tors

Ten Tors Expedition May 2016

Both of Kingswood's Ten Tors teams completed their routes on Dartmoor with plenty of time to spare. The weather was kind throughout, but the teams had to walk into a stiff headwind for most of the first day and be very careful to keep hydrated. Both teams camped on Saturday evening having completed well over half their routes. The teams got off to a very early start on Sunday morning giving themselves plenty of time to finish their 35 mile routes. This year 36 Year 10 pupils participated in Ten Tors training on the Mendips, Marlborough Downs and Dartmoor, so it is no surprise that both teams were successful given the competition for places.

Ten Tors Training 2016

Training for Ten Tors 2016 began in January. After trips to the Mendips and the Marlborough Downs the pupils were introduced to Dartmoor on a three day trip during the Easter Holiday. Camping at Huccaby farm near Hexworthy the pupils enjoyed walks near Burrator Reservoir, Postbridge and Fernworthy Reservoir. Conditions ranged from bright sunshine to heavy snow over the three days. The final element of training was the traditional 'trial run' on the North Moor of Dartmoor. The pupils walked 30 miles over two days proving that they had learned the skills of navigation, camp craft and team work needed to see them through the Ten Tors Expedition in May.

Ten Tors 2015

The Kingswood Year Ten 35 mile team were extremely successful this year. Finishing at the remarkably early time of 9.15am on the Sunday they were the 2nd team to finish out of the hundreds of teams that took part. The team walked very strongly, in variable conditions, to reach their 8th Tor on Saturday evening. Setting off again at 6am on Sunday they completed their final Tors in excellent time. Competition for selection was tough once again this year with 26 pupils participating in training for the event. Training took place from January to May and included trips to the Mendips, Marlborough Downs and Dartmoor. The final team who performed so well consisted of Ed, Will, Tim, Charlie, Oli and Theo.

Ten Tors Training 2014

Training for Ten Tors 2014 began with two trips to the Mendips and one to the Marlborough Downs before the focus moved to Dartmoor.  Competition for the Year 10 (35 mile) team was tough with nearly thirty pupils starting training.  For the Year 13 (55 mile team) there were only ever six pupils willing to have a go given the many other pressures of a final examination year.   With the local walks completed, the teams visited Dartmoor on three occasions culminating in a ‘Trial Run’ which included two nights camping and routes of up to 35 miles.  Training was often undertaken in very poor weather but all of the pupils, successful or otherwise, demonstrated great determination and good humour throughout.

Ten Tors Expedition 2014

Once again the Ten Tors Expedition took place in extremely challenging weather conditions with high winds and persistent rain.  Both Kingswood teams started well on Saturday morning making good progress on their respective routes.  On Saturday evening the Year 13 (55 mile) team camped in between their 5th and 6th tor, whilst the Year 10 (35 mile) team camped just beyond their 7th tor.  On Sunday morning both teams set off early but delays due to illness led to the 55 mile team having to drop out mid-morning.  The 35 mile team, however, continued to walk strongly and completed their expedition by 11:30am.  This is a tremendous achievement considering the conditions they endured on the moor.

The successful 35 mile team were Freya Jones, Eddie Narbett, Louis Charley, Rory Finnamore, Harry Heap, and team leader Poppy Roper.
