"Westwood Boarding House will provide a happy caring environment, where strong friendships can be built and where relations between staff and students are productive and respectful." (adapted from a BSA statement)
Year 7 and Year 8 boarding numbers in the Lower School remain strong, with space for 45 boys and girls to board. The boarding staff team is headed by Mr Duke, who is helped by his wife. Mrs Curtis has responsibility for the girls and she is supported by Mr Thatcher. All three members of staff live in the building with their respective families and the focus is very much on creating a caring, kind, safe and warm family environment for the boarders. In order to help achieve this, the boarders are encouraged to personalise their areas in the dormitories with photos of family. There are often day pupils who will 'casually board' and the weekly and full boarders are very proud to welcome such pupils into 'their home'.
Many boarding pupils come from the UK, but this year we also have a wonderful mix of different nationalities who bring with them their culture, language and traditions which helps to create a global and more tolerant atmosphere. During the year we celebrate this diversity with themed meals.
The Westwood boarders are supported throughout the day by their respective tutors and specially selected Year 12 prefects who work alongside these tutors bringing that 'older sibling' feel to the House. There are also additional staff doing boarding duties during the week and at the weekends who are hugely supportive of our boarders.
The boarders' lounge is equipped with comfy sofas, an enormous HD television, a Wii and a PS4 which are all enjoyed recreationally in the evenings and weekends. This free time can also include competitive games of table football, pool and table tennis. When the weather is better in the summer term, Westwood boarders can enjoy our beautiful campus after prep. The boarders might be involved in sports fixtures on Saturdays or take part in a cookery or creative activity in the House. The boarders' Sunday programme is very well established and varied; this year it includes team building at Hidden Woods, trips to the theatre, ten pen bowling, Cheddar Gorge, the Oasis swimming complex in Swindon and Thorpe Park. We also have a camping weekend in June which has in previous years involved water sports. We would be delighted to meet prospective boarding families and our Year 8 Captains of Boarding would be thrilled to show you around their house and to talk to you about life as a boarder in Westwood. The boarders mix fully with the day pupils during the normal school day. You can download the Westwood House: Daily and Weekend Routine and the Westwood House Handbook and Westwood House Events.
