Games & PE

Kingswood School is fortunate in having extensive sporting facilities based on three sites.

The Upper fields, located three-quarters of a mile from the Main School, cover 60 acres of land. This includes a brand new flood-lit astro-turf and practice area. In addition eight rugby pitches are marked out as well as various soccer and hockey pitches during the first two terms, whilst in the summer term there are three cricket squares, ten tennis courts - used for netball in the second term, and a fully equipped 400 metre shale athletics track.

The Middle field is 11 acres of grassland and consists of a rugby pitch with training grids and a soccer pitch in the first two terms. In the Summer term it provides a 200 metre grass track and various rounders pitches.

The Main School campus includes an Astroturf surface providing a full size, flood-lit hockey pitch surrounded by fencing, and a mini-astro which is primarily a cricket net area but provides a useful recreational facility for activities all year round. The indoor facilities comprise a Sports Hall with markings for 4 badminton courts, netball, tennis, volleyball, indoor hockey and 5 a-side football. A climbing wall at one end of the Sports Hall and indoor cricket nets with suitable matting are valuable extra facilities. Adjacent to the Sports Hall are two squash courts and a fully-equipped fitness room.

The indoor swimming pool is a heated, four-lane, 20-yard area ranging in depth from 1 metre to 1.8 metres. The pool area includes changing facilities for boys and girls and a spectator gallery.

Our Games playing philosophy is very much ‘sport for all'; Kingswood runs B and C teams when possible in all its main sports. We also ensure that the ‘gifted and talented' fulfil their potential through the implementation of individual arrangements and support, as appropriate.

Kingswood has produced a number of International sportsmen and women in recent years and numerous County level performers in all our sports. The School also fully supports students who excel in sports outside the Kingswood curriculum.

Touring is also a main part in the Games programme. Over the last four years Kingswood has taken tours to Australia and Fiji, South America, and South Africa. The aim is to give students the opportunity to tour at least once in their school careers.

Kingswood's PE programme offers a double period for Years 7-9 and a single period in Years 10 and 11 when the GCSE becomes an option. These sessions are aimed at developing individual skills within group surroundings and include activities such as Swimming; Gymnastics; Creative movement; Orienteering and Minor games

The whole Games and PE programme is designed to enable every pupil to enjoy sport and fulfil his or her potential in a wide variety of activities. The opportunity to work within a team and, for some students, to take the responsibility of leading sides is seen as a very important life-skill and is given due recognition within the School structure.
