To see what has been happening at High Vinnalls recently, please visit our High Vinnalls House blog.
High Vinnalls is Kingswood Prep School’s boarding house and caters for our youngest boarders aged 7-11 years and holds a maximum of 20 boarders. If you are looking for an ideal place for little children to be looked after and cared for, then you could not find anywhere more homely, relaxed and happy than High Vinnalls.
Set in idyllic grounds, with plenty of places to run around, outdoor zip wires, trampolines, woods and activity areas, High Vinnalls gives young children the space to be themselves. It is the perfect start for young boarders and the staff ensure that they receive the highest levels of pastoral care, security and a nurturing environment in a home from home atmosphere.
The House, which is warm and friendly, is run by House parents Andrew and Alison Ward, who have two boys of their own, Samuel and Charlie. Andrew also teaches sport at the Prep School and both he and Alison, also a teacher, have lots of experience looking after young children. Tasty meals are taken in the boarders’ dining room, sent down from the Kingswood catering department. Lots of support with homework, help with reading, reminding to do music practise and organising sports kit is undertaken by the House parents, who are supported by Assistant House parents, James and Hannah Hull who have a son, Joshua. James also teaches at the Prep School and is the Adventure Activities co-ordinator as well as the Holiday Club Manager.
All the children walk the short distance to school escorted by the House parents and are collected at the end of the school day. You can view or download a copy of the daily and weekend High Vinnalls Routine.
The facilities are excellent. High Vinnalls is a house set in its own grounds and, as well as the kitchen and homely dining room, there is a cosy lounge with television, DVDs and Wii, a conservatory for quiet times which also has table football for noisier times! Upstairs there are spacious and comfortable bedrooms where the children are encouraged to decorate their own areas to make them feel more at home. There is also an in-house laundry for all the muddy sports kit!
Communication with parents is outstanding and the House parents are available by email or phone at any time. The boarding staff write pastoral reports twice a year and are in contact regularly, both if there is a problem or something to celebrate.
If children at High Vinnalls have siblings in the Senior School they will have opportunities to meet up with them either when the Prep School children go up to the Senior School or their elder brothers and sisters come down to meet them in High Vinnalls.
Life is very busy at High Vinnalls and there are lots of activities every weekend. Some of the recent ones have included: making pizzas, bowling, craft days, shopping trips, quiz nights, cinema trips, geo-caching, Advent Supper, making decorations, trampolining, ice skating, attending the Christmas Fayre and visiting Cribbs’ Causeway.
Wacky Wednesdays are run on a regular basis when other prep school children or those considering boarding are invited to sleepover and have some fun – these activities range from Bingo Nights to Nerf Gun Wars! There are also termly Theme Nights with the most recent one based around TV Quiz Shows – Bullseye, Countdown and Catchphrase! Other Theme Nights have included Inventors & Inventions, St. Patrick’s Day, World Cup Football, World of Books and Superheroes!
As well as our full boarders, we also offer weekly and flexible boarding arrangements for Prep School children. We are aware of the challenges facing working parents and are delighted to help whenever we can.
