Kingswood Senior Literary Society

The New Day Room positively hummed with lively debate on Tuesday 6th October when the Kingswood Senior Literary Society met to discuss whether the Harry Potter novels should be considered "real" literature. Over thirty students listened to arguments for and against the motion, supported by Hattie G and Jo and opposed by Hattie R and Jamie. One of the key arguments for the motion rested on the idea that the Harry Potter novels met the criteria for being described as “real” literature, through the depth of characterisation, plot development and the themes explored. In opposition it was argued that the Potter “phenomenon” owed much to successful marketing and film “tie–ins” and would not stand the test of time. Alice chaired the sometimes heated but good-humoured debate, and the motion was carried by a comfortable majority. All the students involved deserve commendation for the informed and intelligent nature of the discussion, which included reference to a wide range of authors, including Austen, Bronte, Joyce and Tolkien
The next meeting is scheduled to coincide with a visit from the poet Micheal O'Siadhail in November.
