Mathematics at Kingswood
Mathematics is like marmite…..most people state that they either love it or hate it, and in many cases their feelings toward the subject stem from their experiences of mathematics at school.
It is the collective goal of the department to enable each child to develop his or her academic ability and receive a positive experience in a stimulating setting which allows them to fulfil their potential. It is our firm belief that students thrive when they are challenged to view mathematics not as a dull body of distinct dry pieces of information but, given the right direction and encouragement, to follow the lead of the mathematekoi: finding connections with the world around them.
"A mathematician, like a painter or poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas." G. H. Hardy
This view of a mathematician as a creative vessel is important, both for the engagement of the students and the development of the subject at Kingswood.
