Kingswood School
The Wesleyan Inheritance
video not loaded

Inevitably, and thankfully, some of the traits of the eighteenth century schooling have been consigned to the history books. However, there are still some key themes in John Wesley's educational vision that remain important to the School today.  We are eager to see young people search for truth in a context where questions are vital in any sphere of learning. So, breadth of enquiry and discovering the skills of oral and written debate are paramount. We would want students to tackle both academic issues and those of the wider world. The School encourages boys and girls to follow Wesley's habit of challenging some of the values of the society in which they live. Discovering responsible citizenship is very high on the agenda. We work hard to surround young people with those who see their teaching as a vocation and their pastoral engagement as the high points of the day. If students can learn the art of dedication, both in study and service, then the expectations of our founder are met. Of course,Wesley wanted all of this to be grounded on the idea that Christianity has something distinctive to offer to education. However, this was not, and is not, to be something only of the heart. Just as John Wesley shaped both church and state in his day, so we in ours, would be happy to see young minds so vigorously employed for the good of themselves and others.

“Do all the good you can;
By all the means you can;
In all the ways you can;
At all the places you can;
At all the times you can;
To all the the people you can;
As long as ever you can.”

John Wesley 1703 - 1791
