The History Department visit to Berlin 2010
In the first week of the Easter holidays, 52 GCSE History students and five staff travelled to Berlin to visit sites associated with the Germany section of the GCSE History course. The most memorable excursions included the Reichstag, home of the ill-fated Weimar democracy (and now rebuilt as the home of the German Parliament), the Olympic Stadium, which was built by the Nazi regime for the 1936 Olympics, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, and the Holocaust Memorial and Museum. A number of other museums and sites were also visited, such as Checkpoint Charlie, the notorious crossing point from East Berlin to West Berlin during the Cold War. The group was very fortunate with the weather, which was dry and sunny for the duration of the stay. The students took great interest in all the places visited, and not only enjoyed the history of Berlin, but also an opportunity to unwind, particularly on the water slides at a local swimming pool during one of the evening activities!
