On Friday 23 April, A level Drama and English at Kingswood were privileged to have the Artistic Director of the National Theatre, Sir Nicholas Hytner, visit Kingswood to talk to them. This was a most eagerly anticipated discussion not least because, as part of their studies, both classes have been studying Alan Bennett's ‘The History Boys', which Sir Nicholas directed for stage and film. He answered the students' questions which ranged from wondering how the piece had been developed originally to thought-provoking queries about the development of character and the artistic differences between the film and theatre scripts. We were also given a valuable insight into his longstanding and incredibly productive working relationship with Alan Bennett. Our students were also able to ask him about the acting profession; he gave some extremely useful and insightful words of advice for all of our budding actors. What was apparent to everyone who was fortunate enough to be at the talk was just how knowledgeable, influential and passionate Sir Nicholas is about theatre and the arts. We are all extremely grateful to him for making time in his busy schedule to visit us at Kingswood. A truly memorable occasion!
