Kingswood Senior Debating Society: Tuesday 20th September 2011
Once again the Debating Society confirmed its reputation as being the forum for informed - sometimes heated - debates on topical issues at Kingswood School. The evening's motion - "This House believes that the recent riots were motivated by derpivation not greed" - was proposed by Sam Coates and Kristina Grant, and opposed by Peter Evans and Kriti Rana. The role of Chair was shared by Sam-Jared Coventry and Lucy Bird, who maintained order when required and steered the debate in a highly professional manner! A large audience of well-informed and articulate sixth formers explored issues related to the motion, including the impact of recent cuts on communities, how far individuals can - and should - take responsibility for their own actions; and how the nation should move forward, politically and socially. At the vote the motion was carried by a narrow majority. We look forward to our next meeting! Details to follow.
