The Study of Government & Politics
“The citizen can bring our political and governmental institutions back to life, make them responsive and accountable, and keep them honest. No one else can.”
The study of Government and Politics promotes good citizenship, by developing students’ understanding of the workings of government as well as the ways in which citizens participate in the political process, through the electoral system, pressure groups and political parties. The subject provides students with the opportunity to formulate their own views of various contemporary political developments, and to debate these in lessons. Both the UK and US political systems are studied during the two year course, which allows students to draw conclusions about the relative merits of each, and the democratic political process as a whole. The subject is a popular option in the sixth form, with many students opting to pursue a related degree course at university.
