The English Department at Kingswood School is a highly successful team, committed to developing our students’ ability to express themselves clearly and confidently, both on paper and in discussion. Literature lies at the heart of our teaching throughout the School but we also ensure that students are able to write for a variety of audiences and contexts. In Years 7, 8 and 9 time is made for silent reading and creative writing, activities we value and that the students enjoy.

In addition to our classroom activities, we ensure that our students are involved in a wide range of extra-curricular enrichment activities, which include the annual Kingswood Poetry Competition, visits from theatre companies, writers-in-residence and theatre visits. Students of all ages have the opportunity to join one of our Debating societies, in order to develop those all-important communication skills. In the Sixth Form the Literary Society meets regularly to discuss the works of famous writers, and to experiment with their own writing. In all our activities our aim is to develop confident, articulate and well-read students.
