The Kingswood Curriculum

We are keen to give our pupils intellectual challenges and we encourage independent thought at all times.  Active participation in lessons through discussion, practical activities, educational visits and role play is considered vital to our pupils' progress.  Our curriculum builds on pupils' past educational experiences and allows them to achieve deeper understanding of and greater competence in each aspect of the curriculum as they move through Kingswood.  Formative assessment plays a central role in lessons, contributing to a learning experience which is a genuinely personal partnership between pupils, teachers and parents.

Sarah Dawson, Deputy Head Academic

Art
Our Art department is a place where students of all ages feel welcome and wish to be whether in lesson time or in one of the many activities on offer.
Classics
As well as linguistic study, we touch on aspects of philosophy, religion, history, geography, politics and aesthetics, our pupils often find their studies in Latin helpful in other subjects.
Computing
As well as the challenges and opportunities provided by the A level course, students are also encouraged to take on the challenges of competitions such as those offered by the The British Information Olympiad.
Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking is entirely skills based, but the normal expectation of students wishing to take the AS is that they will have obtained at least grade A*/A in every GCSE subject, that they have taken.
Design Technology

We are well equipped with ‘state of the art’ Computer Aided Technology machines and our own computer room whilst we also retain all the traditional skills for use with project work.

Drama & Theatre Studies
The School has a long tradition of excellence in this area. Its reputation is such that the wide variety of performances each year attracts audiences that have come to expect a professional standard production.
EAL
The EAL Department supports and helps students who are learning English as a second or additional language.
Economics & Business Studies
The course equips students with an excellent awareness and understanding of recent economic events and business trends.
English
Literature lies at the heart of our teaching throughout the School, but we also ensure that students are able to write for a variety of audiences and contexts.
Geography
Geography is a contemporary and dynamic subject and this is part of its attraction for both teachers and students.
Government & Politics
The subject provides students with the opportunity to formulate their own views of various contemporary political developments, and to debate these in lessons.
History
To learn about individuals and societies in the past is to gain a greater insight into the potential of men and women to be both creative and destructive.
