Computing Through a Practical Approach
Computing is currently available at A level. Students are prepared for the exciting challenges of Computing through a practical approach. In the first year of the sixth form they are given the opportunity to develop the necessary problem-solving skills as well as a being introduced to structured computer programming. Assessment at the end of this first year of study takes the form of a practical programming task, undertaken under examination conditions, as well as a more traditional written examination.
In the second year of the course the students are given the opportunity to develop their programming knowledge by considering differing programming paradigms such as event driven programming and object orientated programming. They then put their programming skills and knowledge to the test by completing a substantial programming based project, working through all of the phases of the software development life cycle. In addition to this computer based project there is also a more traditional written examination.
As well as the challenges and opportunities provided by the A level course, students also encouraged to take on the challenges of competitions such as those offered by the The British Information Olympiad.
