Prep Years 3 - 6
In these years the form teacher oversees the social, emotional and academic development of the pupils. The School offers broad and enriched curriculum tailored to the needs of the individual children. English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History and Religious Education (RE) are delivered mainly by the form teachers whilst Art, Design Technology (DT), Drama, French, Games, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Music and Physical Education (PE) are taught by specialists.
In the first two years in the Prep for those aged seven to nine, (Years 3 and 4) there are two parallel classes in each year group, based in the Pegasus building in the old kitchen garden. We aim for no class to be more than 20 pupils. In Years 5 and 6 (children aged nine to eleven) an extra class is added, classes are reorganised and the children occupy the beautiful Summerhill House. The close proximity of the classes within each year group is designed to foster teamwork.
All classes are mixed ability apart from Mathematics which is set from Year 3. The favourable staff – pupil ratio enables individual attention to be given to those needing support as well as those who need extending. Initially it is expected that Year 3 pupils will spend 20 minutes per weekday evening on homework. This increases to 40 minutes in Year 6. Children are also expected to read for half an hour a day. At the start of Year 6, specific academic preparation for the Kingswood Entrance Assessments, is provided.
An emphasis on learning being fun and experiential is continued from the Pre-Prep. There are many themed days and visits throughout the year which are linked to a topic theme including a residential trip ranging from two days (one night) for Year 3 children to 5 days for Year 5 and Year 6. For children with identified specific learning difficulties there is a Learning Support department from whom individuals have support once or twice a week to meet their particular needs.
Sport is an important part of the curriculum. Kingswood Prep School has a ‘Sport for All' policy. Every child in the Prep department has an opportunity to represent their school in each major sport. As part of the sports programme children are also introduced to a range of minor sports and outdoor activities to encourage and prepare them for healthy lifestyles.
A major school production takes place in the Summer Term in the Senior School Theatre and involves every child in the Prep department. There is an extensive extra-curricular programme with, on average, about 45 lunchtime and after school activities ranging from sports to aesthetics and music. In addition, there is free supervision of children after school until 5.30pm in Late Care and beyond that by arrangement.
