Pupils' Health & Welfare

The well-being of all our pupils is of utmost important to us and the School has excellent facilities for health care, in addition to the pastoral support provided by Housemasters, Housemistresses and the Deputy Head (Pastoral), Reverend Mike Wilkinson, who is also the School Chaplain.

The Medical Centre is covered 24 hours a day throughout each term by the Sister-in-Charge, Sister Helen Skinner RSCN, RGN, and two trained nurses, Staff Nurse Gillian Magniac, RSCN, and Staff Nurse Laura Rodger RN (Child). The School Doctor, Dr Timothy Harris, BM, BCh(Oxon), MRCGP, DRCOG, and his partner Dr Amanda Combe, MB, ChB (Sheffield), MRCGP, DRCOG, DFFP, each visit weekly.  There are three official surgeries daily but any pupil, whether boarder or day, can visit the Medical Centre outside surgery hours when the need arises. There is a good working relationship between the teaching staff and the Medical Centre.

In the first term at Kingswood every new boy and girl is seen by the nursing staff for routine health checks.

Boarders. All students have medicals carried out on an annual basis and any immunisations will be brought up to date as necessary. Additionally, all girl boarders have their height and weight recorded each term. Some boys may have their height and weight recorded every term if there is concern about their weight or growth.

Day Pupils. All day girls are seen annually for medicals and day boys will be seen on entry to the School and additionally in Years 9 or 10 when immunisations are due so that parents can be reminded to see their own GP. If parents of day pupils wish them to be seen more frequently, they should ring the nursing staff.

Every year, during the Autumn Term, the entire school community is offered influenza immunisation.

Hospital and/or specialist appointments are arranged and transport can be organised by taxi. Pupils are accompanied by Medical Centre staff where necessary. (The cost of the taxi is included on the school bill.)

Sister Skinner can be contacted in the Medical Centre at any time during term-time when parents may wish to discuss medical or pastoral problems.
