Boarding & Day
In daytime hours, Kingswood operates like a boarding school. It is a busy place and it thrives on the ‘always something to do' model, with the day finishing at 5.30pm for day pupils in Years 9–11. Sixth form day students have the option of going home at 4.20pm but, in our experience, many will choose to stay where friendships, team practices or additional time with their art, music or drama encourages them to remain active at school.
The ‘House' system seeks to integrate day and boarding students. Houses are paired, one boy, one girl, for social and competitive reasons and although the buildings have sections for exclusive boarding usage, the public lounges and games areas are the places where our students are free to gather in non-teaching time. A new, central Common Room for Years 9–11, also provides a haven for those who want to catch time together.
During lunchtimes and at the end of the teaching day, pupils move into ‘activity' mode. The choice is vast and no one can claim that they are bored. It is by means of this ‘full' day that Kingswood fosters not only holistic education but also strong friendships. The movement from House, to class, to Common Room, to Dining Hall, to sports field, creates that mix of people and opportunity for engagement that promotes both early ‘getting to know' and confidence in relationships. The School prides itself on a community built in this way.
